Man accused of drugging, raping teenager

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - A 32-year-old Stevens Point businessman has been accused of drugging an 18-year-old woman and raping her at his home.

Sheriff's deputies say Steven Tibbetts first met the 18-year-old woman at a cafe he owns in Stevens Point March fifth. The next day, deputies say Tibbetts brought the woman to his house and gave her an energy drink.

"The suspect said allegedly a substance was put in her Monster energy drink, and she did recognize it was a little bit unusual but didn't think much of it at the time," said Chief Deputy Daniel Kontos of the Portage County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies say he put drugs in her drink. According to court documents, the woman passed out and later woke up to Tibbetts having sex with her. She told investigators she went outside to call for help, but Tibbetts followed her and gave her a ride to her sister's house. The woman went to the hospital later that night.

"There's physical evidence, electronic evidence,” said Kontos. “We've had some samples sent in to the crime lab to be analyzed."

A sheriff's deputy talked with the woman at the hospital, leading officers to arrest Tibbetts that same night. He appeared in court Monday and is scheduled to return next month.

"The court will hear evidence in whether or not a felony was committed and probably committed by the defendant," said Louis Molepske, the Portage County district attorney.

Deputies say ever since Tibbetts was arrested, others have called with information about him.

"Some people are coming forward with other allegations, some people are providing us with other information, some anonymous some not," said Kontos.

But deputies say they still need your help.

"If anyone else has any other information they'd like to provide, they should feel free to come forward either to the sheriff's office or the city police department,” said Kontos. “Or if they'd like to remain anonymous they can call Portage County Crimestoppers and leave the information there."

We left a message for Tibbetts' attorney, but he hasn't returned our call.

Tibbetts' preliminary hearing is set for April 14, according to online Portage County court records.
Tibbetts is free on a $5,000 cash bond, court records said.
