Owen-Withee girls basketball seeking first state title

Posted:
Owen-Withee head girls basketball coach Al Guthman has more wins than any other high school girls basketball coach in Wisconsin high school basketball history.

But still, he is without a state championship.

This weekend, the Blackhawks will be making their ninth state tournament appearance; they will also be searching for their first title.

Owen-Withee will match up against Barneveld, which is ranked first in Division 5. The Blackhawks are no stranger to the underdog role, though. In their two most recent apperances at state, in 2005 and 2012, Guthman's squad faced off against the number one team in the state, winning both times to advance to the state championship game.

"We're hoping history will continue to repeat itself,” Guthman said. “Barneveld is a well-coached team and they have an excellent ball team.

The neat thing about, especially state tournaments is you get down there and you can throw out the rankings, you can throw out the records and just play ball."

Owen-Withee plays Barneveld at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday in a WIAA Division 5 Semifinal.
