Athlete of the Week: Stephany Heggemeier, Owen-Withee

OWEN (WAOW) - With only one senior, the Owen-Withee girls basketball team is full of youth.

So when the team was locked in a dogfight in its sectional final, junior guard Stephany Heggemeier knew it was her time to step up.

Really wanting to get back to state, and wanting to do it for the team,” Heggemeier said. “And just knowing that I had to step up for the younger girls.”

Heggemeier dropped an Owen-Withee program record 35 points in the Blackhawk' win over South Shore last Saturday.

Every time we needed a basket she just came down and hit it,” said Owen-Withee head coach Al Guthman, the winningest high school girls basketball coach in Wisconsin history. “Not only did she score 35, but they were key baskets. Time after time after time.”

As for the record, Heggemeier said she was unaware during the game, but is thrilled that her name is now in her school's record books.

I had no idea as the game was going on,” Heggemeier said with a smile. “Everyone congratulated me after it was over. It's just nice to know that it will be remembered.”

Guthman stressed the team aspect of the game, but said that records like this should be recognized.

It's all about the team,” he said. “But when an individual breaks a record like this, we help them celebrate.”

Individual records aside, the junior, who was on Owen-Withee's runner-up team in 2012, said she is focused on nothing more than bringing home Owen-Withee's first state title.

(It would mean) just about everything,” Heggemeier explained. “Getting a silver ball was great, but winning it would be just amazing.”

Owen-Withee plays its state semifinal game against Barneveld Thursday afternoon at 3:15 p.m.
