Lebanon's Cabinet wins confidence vote

Posted:
BEIRUT (AP) - Lebanon's new national unity Cabinet has won a confidence vote in parliament after bridging divisions largely tied to the civil war in neighboring Syria.

The state news agency says Prime Minister Tammam Salam's government garnered the support of 96 out of 101 lawmakers who attended Thursday's vote.

Salam's 24-person Cabinet includes members of a Western-backed coalition, as well as the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group and its allies. Following more than 10 months of political wrangling, Salam cobbled together his government in February after bridging a political divide among Lebanon's political forces.

The government is not expected to remain in office long. A new Cabinet should be formed after President Michel Suleiman's six-year term ends in May and a new head of state is elected.
