Firefighters warn about dangerous ice

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Area firefighters say it is no  longer safe  to venture out on the ice of lakes and rivers.

"People need to be aware that the ice is dangerous and they should not go on it," said Lt. Jeremy Kopp of the Wausau Fire Department.

There's already been one tragedy.

A Wausau veterinarian confirmed to Newsline 9 that  a pet owner reported two dogs fell through the ice on Thursday and are now presumed drowned.

Firefighters say the snow cover on the ice makes it difficult to see open areas in the ice and predicting how quickly it will melt is tricky.

"Depending on whether it is under a bridge or in the open sunlight or the shade it will melt at different speeds. The shoreline goes quickly because it is shallow. Some areas you think are safe are not," Kopp said.
