Future of Wisconsin ginseng discussed at conference

ROTHSCHILD (WAOW) - Wisconsin agriculture officials say the state's ginseng must be protected.

Industry leaders gathered Saturday at the 11th annual Wisconsin Ginseng Growers Conference.

They talked about the threat of foreign companies imitating Wisconsin ginseng.

Approximately 120 people attended the conference in Rothschild.

Officials say the ginseng industry is on the rise and they are working to maintain Wisconsin's high standards of quality.

"Growers now see new markets, see new opportunities," said Sec. Ben Brancel of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture. "The price is improving and so some of those growers are starting to expand their operations."

Officials say Wisconsin produces 95 percent of America's ginseng and 85 percent of the nation's ginseng exports.
