Accused Stevens Point arsonist in court

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - A 39-year-old man Stevens Point who told investigators he started his apartment on fire with gasoline because he wanted to go back to prison made his first court appearance on three felony charges Monday.

A preliminary hearing for Roy Strait was scheduled for April 7, at which time prosecutors will present evidence to justify the charges of arson and two counts of recklessly endangering safety, according to online Portage County court records.

Strait is accused of starting the March 4 fire that forced two people to be rescued and destroyed a Stevens Point home remodeled into four apartments.

Strait appearance via video conference for Monday's initial appearance, court records said.

Strait told investigators he planned the fire because he “felt alone and wanted to go back to prison,” the complaint said.

He said he started the fire with gasoline and needed to run through flames to escape, the complaint said.

Strait remains in jail on a $100,000 bond.
