Skiers enjoy slopes in Rib Mountain before season ends

RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) - The start of spring isn't stopping people from hitting the slopes at Granite Peak Ski Area in Rib Mountain.

"We're on spring break with our kids. We were here last year and we had such a good time that we decided to come back," said Kristen Brown of Green Oaks, IL.

The ski area kicked off the start of spring with its Avalanche Days. This promotion follows a winter season of record-setting cold.

"We have had a very strong season despite the cold weather that we saw in January and February," said Kelsey Beasland, the office supervisor.

Granite Peak workers have no exact numbers on how many people hit the slopes this year, but they say thousands of skiers took advantage of plenty of snow.

"The cold did keep some people away,” said Beasland. “But mostly they rescheduled their trips and are now here during the spring vacation time."

People from all across the country come back every year. Some say spring is their favorite time to ski.

"It's perfect ski weather, you know in the 30s, a little light snow earlier so with the sun out it's great skiing," said Brown.

Workers say this is one of the busiest starts to spring they've seen.

"We have seen a lot of traffic coming through for spring time I would say more in the past," said Beasland.

Avalanche Days lasts until April 6. Granite Peak will reopen for its final weekend on April 11.
