Phase two of bird sculptures stalled

WAUSAU (WAOW) - The flock of bird sculptures on Highway 52 in Wausau might not grow.

In a joint meeting of the Finance and Economic Development committees, members voted to end the Highway 52 Parkway and Stewart Improvement project.

In the original plan, more bird sculptures were going to be installed in a second phase. But now, that phase is stalled.

The finance chair says phase one will be completed. Workers still need to finish an $18,000 irrigation project.

"With all of the things that have ensued both with the process and the missteps along the way, we felt it was best to use that $220,000 to a better purpose and defer action on this second batch of birds," said Lisa Rasmussen, an Economic Development Committee member.

The full council will vote on whether or not to complete phase two at a later date.
