UPDATE: Elderly man, dog die in rural home fire

Posted: Updated:
FREMONT (WAOW) – An elderly man and his pet dog died in an early-morning fire Tuesday that destroyed a rural Fremont home, the Waupaca County Sheriff's Department said.

The victim's 77-year-old wife escaped the blaze and was treated for smoke inhalation, Sgt. John Mocadlo said.

The fire that killed Wayne Tesch, 82, erupted about 3:30 a.m., and the home was “fully engulfed with fire” when firefighters arrived, Macadlo said in a statement.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation but it is believed to be accidental, he said.

Tesch died of carbon monoxide poisoning, Macadlo said.

The family's pet dog Molly, a beagle hound, was also killed, he said.
