Marathon Co. board approves $13.5M renovation

WAUSAU (WAOW) - The Marathon County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday overwhelmingly voted to spend $13.5 million to renovate Mount View Care Center, a nursing home for about 220 residents.

The biggest improvement will involve converting semi-private rooms with shared bathrooms into all private rooms with private baths, said Gary Bezucha, chief executive officer for Northcentral Health Care Center, which includes Mount View.

"We have been recognized for the quality of care given," he said. "This is going to bring the physical plant up to the same standards as the quality of care in it."

The county board voted 29-5 to pass a resolution authorizing the work, which is expected to start in late summer or early fall and take up to two years to complete, Bezucha said.

Mount View is one of the largest nursing homes in the state and is the largest county-owned nursing home, he said.

County Administrator Brad Karger said the county will sell general obligation bonds to finance the project. Those bonds will be repaid with property taxes.

Bezucha said the project also includes remodeling a rehabilitation area and building a more "user friendly" main entrance.

"I was very, very pleased to see it was so overwhelmingly passed," he said. "It tells me the county understands the importance of this nursing home."
