Stray cats in Wausau will soon have a home again

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Stray cats in Wausau will have a home again. The city council unanimously approved a contract with the Marathon County Humane Society.

The City of Wausau and the Everest Metro Police Department will pay just more than $32,000 for that contract.

$30,000 will go toward housing or euthanizing the first 150 stray cats. For any animals brought in after that, the fee will be $220 per cat.

The rest of the money will be used to take care of up to 12 other stray animals.

The Marathon County Board decided to stop paying to shelter stray cats back in May. So each municipality had to work out individual contracts.

"It does significantly reduce the cost of the contract, the initial contracts came in nearly $80,000 this one is just over 32," said Wausau City Council Member, Lisa Ramussen.

The new contract starts March 31st and expires at the end of the year.
