Ex-rebel says guerrilla commander ordered massacre

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) - A former rebel says an ex-guerilla commander gave the order to kill 22 people suspected of collaborating with the army.

The claim came in testimony Tuesday in the first trial against a rebel leader charged with taking part in a massacre during Guatemala's civil war.

Jaime Tuyux testified that defendant Fermin Felipe Solano Barillas made the decision to kill the civilians in the village of El Aguacate without consulting his superiors.

Tuyux says he learned about the killings when Solano Barillas gave a group of rebel leaders, including him, a verbal report about what was happening in the area he was commanding.

Solano Barrillas is a former commander of the rebel group known as the Revolutionary Organization of the People in Arms.
