MARSHFIELD (WAOW) - 2014 has been a year to remember for Marhsfield's Matt Oestreich. The senior helped lead the Tigers to a sectional final appearance, and for his efforts was named as a First Team All-Wisconsin Valley Conference player.

Now, he's looking to build off of that success as he enters his senior season of track and field.

It gives me a lot of confidence to know that my hard work and stuff has really paid off,” Oestreich said. “I just want to build off of that and be really confident... and just to my best.”

The standout athlete said the transition from basketball back to track and field will take time, especially because of the significant differences between the two sports.

Practice is definitely the number one difference for me,” Oestreich said. “ Basketball is really a stop and go sport at times and then track is all about short bursts and making sure you're really in shape.”

However, the senior thinks he's ready. After qualifying for state in the triple jump, the long jump and the high jump as a junior last season, Oestreich has loftier goals in 2014.

Senior year I feel like I'm going to be stronger and faster obviously,” he said. “So I want to get better in the triple jump, get to the top three maybe. Long jump I want to try to get podium and in high jump I just want to try to get as high as I can for that and beat my personal record.”

Marshfield's track and field season began on Tuesday, March 25. Oestreich took first in the high jump and second in the long jump. He did not compete in the triple jump due to an illness.
