Portage, Taylor counties ranked among healthiest in state

PORTAGE COUNTY (WAOW) - Two central Wisconsin counties have been named among the top five healthiest in the state.

That's according to the annual University of Wisconsin health rankings. Portage County ranks third in the state, followed by Taylor County in fourth. With these rankings, counties can see how they are doing in 29 health factors including smoking, employment, and access to healthy food.

"It's really a great thing I think for all of the residents to say we're ranked third," said Portage County health officer Gary Garske. "What does that mean? That means typically that we're saying residents of Portage County typically have a longer and healthier life compared to other counties in Wisconsin."

According to the survey, Adams and Forest counties were part of the five counties in the poorest health.

The rankings began in 2010.
