Wausau mom sentenced to jail for child neglect

WAUSAU (WAOW) - A 33-year-old Wausau mother of four children was sentenced to seven months in jail and three years of probation involving two separate incidents of how she cared for children, including a newborn baby she put in the garbage, according to online court records.

Zoua Yang pleaded guilty Tuesday to one felony count of concealing the death of a child and two misdemeanor counts of child neglect, court records said. A misdemeanor count of bail jumping was dismissed in the plea deal.

Police records say Yang told investigators she gave birth to a stillborn child in a bathroom at a Wausau home on Oct. 10, placed the baby in a bag and put the bag in a dumpster.

Police learned of the incident Oct. 16 and conducted an unsuccessful search of a landfill in Ringle for the remains, according to police records.

During the investigation, which began with an anonymous tip, Yang told investigators that she didn't know she was pregnant, police records said.

During Tuesday's sentencing, Yang was given credit for 155 days she has already spent in jail, court records said. Marathon County Circuit Judge Gregory Huber also ordered Yang to perform 50 hours of community service.

The child neglect charges were filed in December 2012.
