Write-in candidate defeats incumbent in school board race

Posted: Updated:
AUBURNDALE (WAOW) -- A candidate for the Auburndale School Board whose name was the only one on the ballot has been defeated by a write-in candidate.

Wayne Meyer lost his seat to Susan Strobel-Raab, according to official results.

Meyer's name was the only one on the ballot. He received 168 votes to Strobel-Raab's 231 votes.

According to the Auburndale School District, Strobel-Raab didn't file her official candidacy in time, so she instead filed as an official write-in candidate with the district. Her name did not appear on the ballot, but she still successfully captured more votes than Meyer.

"I had a lot of people, supporters and friends that really kind of took it over and they did everything,” said Strobel-Raab. “They just got the word out to everybody I know through Facebook and things like that."

Strobel-Raab said she had wanted to get involved with the school board because of some big issues facing it in the future, prompting her to file her write-in candidacy.

According to the Auburndale School District website, Meyer had been serving as the school board treasurer, on the board's finance committee, and on the building and grounds committee.

Newsline 9 was unable to reach Meyer for comment.

There are five members of the Auburndale School Board.
