Weston man makes history in school board race

WESTON (WAOW) - 19-year-old Yee Leng Xiong's dream has become a reality, after being elected to the D.C. Everest School Board Tuesday.

"I was refreshing the page every ten seconds trying to see if there were any changes,” said Xiong. “But I have to say that hour was the longest hour I've ever experienced in my life."

When voting was done, Xiong received more than one thousand votes.

"I just feel very blessed and there's no words to describe how happy I felt,” said Xiong.

During his campaign, some questioned Xiong's age. At 19, he is one of the youngest members to ever serve on the board, but he says he's happy voters saw past that.

"I found no one cared about the age,” said Xiong. “They just cared about how determined you are how experienced you are and how much you're willing to put into it."

Another milestone -- he's the first Hmong member to ever be elected to the board.

"I don't feel anything special or anything different,” said Xiong. “But I feel pretty proud of not only myself, but everyone that helped me to get me where I am today."

He says he's starting to feel the pressure of the new position, but he's not letting it get to him just yet.

"Usually when you try something new, you know something like this the pressure is there,” said Xiong. “But eventually you get used to it and it will start disappearing."

Now, he says, he's ready for his first meeting on the board. He says he cannot wait to give back to the community that has given him so much.

Xiong is replacing incumbent Mary Hancock, who held the position for 27 years. Newsline 9 reached out to Hancock, but she did not want to comment on the election. Xiong will be sworn into office next week.
