Shelters send hygiene products across central Wisconsin

WAUSAU ( WAOW) - Shelters across central Wisconsin are trying to help the homeless. Throughout the day Thursday, volunteers in Wausau were busy sorting hygiene items for the Help for the Homeless program.

The program collects items like toothpaste and toiletries and delivers them to crisis sites across the area. This initiative has collected more than one million dollars since 2008.

"What's more important for hygiene if you're looking for a job,” said Kathy Rubino, the director of donations. “You need to present yourself to a potential employer that you can take good care of yourself and you can take care of the customers you'll be working with."

Schools and businesses also helped with boxes for donations. Organizers say the packages will be shipped Friday.
