Resurfacing Wausau's Grand Ave. set to begin

WAUSAU (WAOW) – The state Department of Transportation said Friday that a $2.9 million project to resurface one of Wausau's busiest streets could begin as early as April 28.

The work on Grand Avenue, also known as Business 51, between Kent Street and Division Street will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction, the agency said. Thousands of vehicles use the north-south route through the city each day.

A construction information meeting about the project is planned April 14 at Wausau City Hall.

Besides removing the existing pavement and replacing it, the project involves replacing the street lights, providing bicycle accommodations and removing an existing corrugated median, the DOT said.

Motorists can expect to encounter delays, especially during peak travel hours. The project is scheduled for completion by early October,” said Kristin McHugh, a DOT spokeswoman.

The federal government is providing 80 percent of the money for the project, with the rest coming from a combination of state and local sources, she said.
