Gun club help veterans through turkey hunting

PORTAGE COUNTY (WAOW) - A Portage County gun club is reaching out to veterans through turkey hunting.

The Almond Rod and Gun club took two Marines veterans on a hunt Saturday morning.

Marines veteran Marcel Dera says he couldn't sleep at all the night before because he was so excited about the hunt.

"The moment the gun went off, it's a great feeling," said Dera. "It's a moment of glory. That's how good it feels."

Dera says it felt like a weight came off his chest.

"You feel relieved, it's almost a way of having closure with some of the stuff," said Dera.

Marines veteran Brian Schultz says the hunt helped him in a different way.

"More than a hunt, just a chance to get out and hang with other guys you know," said Schultz. "I hadn't really done that in a long time."

Many veterans struggle after returning home from war. According to a study by the Institute of Medicine about 44 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans say they have had readjustment issues.

Almond Rod and Gun Club president Dan Folan says his club members are glad to help when the veterans come home.

"You have to give back to these men and women one way or another, just to say thank you and that's what we do, we say thank you," said Folan.

Dera encourages other veterans to try hunting.

"I think this is a perfect for relieving, letting go," said Dera.

This was the third year the Almond Gun Club hosted veterans for the Wounded Warrior Turkey Hunt.
