Wood Co. golf course opens, others still to come

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) - The sun is shining and that means it's time for golfers to shine their clubs and sharpen their spikes.

At least one golf course in our area is now open.

Golfers say they're excited to get back to playing the game they love, even if they're a little rusty.

"I'm feeling that I'm not even close to midseason form or anything like that," said Tom Hansen of Wisconsin Rapids.

It's his first time on the golf course this year.

"It's been a long, long winter, and I couldn't wait," Hansen said. "I drove out here last night and saw the pins out, and I couldn't get out here fast enough today."

The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids opened Sunday, and employees say it's been a busy start to the season.

"You get all the members and you get all these people from up north, Stevens Point, Rhinelander, Marshfield, all those courses that aren't open," said Max Goska, the course professional. "They come down and you can just see that everyone's in a great mood."

Goska says this was their second latest start ever, but they opened as soon as they could.

"A couple of the private courses like to get their course in really good shape before they open, and around here we just like to get the golfers out," he said.

That doesn't mean the Ridges is in bad shape. Goska says there isn't that much snow and it's dry enough that carts won't be tearing up the course.

Courses farther north are getting closer to their start dates.

Rib Mountain Golf Course, for example, is scheduled to open this weekend.

But when golfers just need to play, they say they'll do whatever they need to.

"I always come out just to get warmed up, hit a few balls, play a couple balls here and there and work on some shots," Hansen said.

He says now, the real work begins.

"I'll go home and think about it tonight and work on my shots or kind of visualize what I need to do when I come out here the next time," said Hansen.

Ridges officials say the course is in great condition to play.
