Nobel laureate Garcia Marquez leaves hospital

Posted:
MEXICO CITY (AP) - A medical official says Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez has left the hospital where he was treated for eight days for pneumonia and related problems.

Jaqueline Pineda is a spokeswoman for the National Institute for Medical Sciences and Nutrition. She says doctors decided on Tuesday to discharge the 87-year-old Colombian author, who appeared to be headed to his home in southern Mexico City. Pineda said the author's health remains fragile due to his age.

Garcia Marquez is widely considered the most popular Spanish-language writer since Miguel de Cervantes of the 17th century. His extraordinary literary celebrity has spawned comparisons to Mark Twain and Charles Dickens.

He has lived in Mexico for three decades.
