Cuba probes mobile data leak in ZunZuneo case

Posted:
HAVANA (AP) - Cuba says it has launched a probe into how hundreds of thousands of customer cellphone numbers fell into the hands of a U.S. government agency.

An Associated Press investigation reported last week that the U.S. Agency for International Development used the data to secretly set up a Twitter-like, mobile-based social network on the island.

Cuba considers USAID democracy programs launched in the country to be subversive attempts to topple the Communist-run government.

Daniel Ramos is head of security for Cuban state telecom Etecsa. He said Wednesday at a news conference that "an investigation is being held into how (the information) may have gotten out."

Ramos did not give details on the progress of the probe or any measures that may be taken.
