Coldwater Creek in Wausau closing

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Another store in downtown Wausau is closing its doors.

Friday, Coldwater Creek President Jill Dean announced all the the company's stores are closing. Coldwater Creek has not determined an official closing date yet for its stores, but company leaders say liquidation sales will begin in May.

According to a news release, the company is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They say the company has lost money in a tough environment for retail.

Coldwater Creek leaders say they tried to sell the company in the last six months, but couldn't find a buyer.

Dean said in a statement, "We are extremely disappointed with this outcome."

Coldwater Creek has a location on the 400 Block in Wausau. This store closure follows a string of closures in the downtown including, Gap, Hollister and soon JCPenney.

But some say Coldwater Creek's announcement is not a bad omen for the downtown.

"This really was more of business challenges at the national or the corporate level, more so than there were issues locally," said Dawn Follendorf, Wausau River District Director. "There will be new opportunity for businesses looking to grow."

Coldwater creek's property manager says he plans to look for a new tenant immediately.

"These things take a little time to find the right replacement, the right tenant, but that we will do so over time," said Mark Craig Compass Properties General Manager.

For now, shoppers say they'll continue to shop at Coldwater Creek, while they still can.
