1 man dead in Milwaukee house fire

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Authorities say there were no working smoke detectors in a Milwaukee home where a fire claimed a man's life.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's office says 35-year-old Phoukham Athathip was killed in the fire that started in a small cottage on the city's north side about 11 p.m. Thursday

When fire crews arrived, heavy smoke and fire were pouring from a first-floor living room. A bystander told firefighters that someone was still inside the home.

Firefighters removed the man from the house. He was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Deputy Milwaukee Fire Chief Terry Lintonen tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel no smoke detectors were found in the home.

No one else was at the home. The cause remains under investigation.
