DNR holds annual spring hearing

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) - People across the state gathered Monday evening to learn about new hunting rules and changes to outdoor policies.

The Department of Natural Resources held its annual spring hearing Monday night in each county across the state. In Marathon County, one major topic of discussion was the deer herd. The herd is now managed at a county level. At the meeting, DNR officials said despite the brutal winter, the herd looks pretty good.

"I would anticipate that this years deer herd will be very similar to past years in Marathon County. Obviously, we have had a very hard winter, so we will see some decline in the number of deer around here. However, in the end we have enough deer here to sustain a very healthy population," said DNR wildlife biologist Cortney Schaefer.

Also at the meeting, people were able to vote on rule changes. The results should be in by Friday.
