WAUSAU (WAOW) – The fire chief in Stevens Point has been hired to lead the Wausau Fire Department, Mayor Jim Tipple said Wednesday.
The Police and Fire Commission will formally appoint Tracey Kujawa to the job during a meeting Tuesday, and she will take over May 12, Tipple said in a statement.
Kujawa has been fire chief in Stevens Point since 2011. She takes over a department with 58 firefighters and a $6.3 million annual budget.
Kujawa brings a track record of success as a fire chief and is professionally well-rounded, with more than 20 years of line, administrative and leadership experience in fire and emergency services, Tipple said.
Kujawa, who began her career as a firefighter in Stevens Point in 1992, said she was honored to be named to the new job.
“Everybody I have met has been exceptional,” she said in a telephone interview from Stevens Point. “There are always challenges moving into a new job, personal challenges, and a whole lot of opportunity.”
It is too early to say what changes she might recommend, Kujawa said.
Kujawa replaces Gary Buchberger, 62, who retired Jan. 31 after 16 years leading the department. He earned about $105,000 a year.
