Spring snow could affect Northwoods businesses

RHINELANDER (WAOW) - The snow seems to be overstaying its welcome in the Northwoods, which could cause a lot of trouble for businesses there.

"We've had snow on the ground since November, all way through the entire season," said Dana DeMet, the Executive Director of the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce.

The long winter, DeMet says, attracted many people to the area for outdoor sports, giving the city an economic boost.

He says during the last part of 2013, the city of Rhinelander earned $36,000 from taxes on hotel rooms.

That's about $10,000 more than in previous years.

But now, he says the late snow could mean trouble.

"Fishing season is opening May 2," said DeMet. "We don't even know if the snow or ice for that matter will be off the lakes at that point."

He says now in the middle of April, a lot of people are anxious for spring to finally arrive.

"People are ready for the snow to go now," said DeMet.
