UPDATE: Snow plows, loader destroyed in fire

MARATHON CO. (WAOW) - An early morning fire caused millions of dollars in damage at a Marathon County Highway Department storage shed near Stratford.

"For the vehicles approximately $1.5 million and another $700,000 for the structure," said Jim Griesbach, the Marathon County Highway Commissioner.

The damage includes five plow trucks, a loader, a one-ton truck and a skid steer.

"As far as the plow trucks go," said Griesbach. "Two are completely destroyed, three of them we're looking at a possible restoration."

Marathon County Sheriff's Department authorities say someone driving by on State Highway 97 early Friday morning reported the fire. Officials say the fire is still under investigation.

The Marathon County Highway Commissioner says he hopes all the spring storms have all passed through. That way there won't be an immediate need to replace the plows.

"I've been in contact with Wood County to station some trucks," said Griesbach. "They're going to park some trucks in case we do have more winter events."

But he says the lost vehicles affect upcoming plans.

"A few of these trucks are also going to be used haul trucks for summer projects," he said.

Griesbach says the department may have to use contractor trucks until the vehicles are replaced.

"It's going to be sometime before we get something up and running," said Griesbach.

Authorities say investigators are still determining the cause of the fire.

The Marathon County Highway Commissioner says he's working with the insurance company to determine how to replace the vehicles.

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) - An early Friday morning fire at a rural Marathon County Highway Department garage destroyed snow plow trucks, a loader and other equipment, authorities said.

The loss was estimated at $1.5 million and the cause of the fire, which was reported about 3 a.m. at the shed on state Highway 97, remained under investigation.

Highway Commissioner Jim Griesbach said two snow plows were a total loss and three others can be restored.

It was not immediately known how much damage to the building occurred, he said.

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -- A fire at a Marathon County Highway Department building has caused massive damage and departments are still on scene, according to the Marathon County Sheriff's Department.

Officials say someone driving by reported seeing smoke at the facility located on State Highway 97 around 3 a.m. Friday. They say no one was hurt in the fire and no cause has been found.

The Edgar and Stratford Fire Departments are still on scene, according to the Sheriff's Department. Initial reports put damage estimated at $1.5 million, but officials say that amount is expected to change as the investigation continues.

Sheriff's officials say six trucks, a front end loader and a skid steer were heavily damaged in the fire. They say the blaze has since been put out.

The fire is currently under investigation.
