UWSP students compete in public speaking contest

Posted:
STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - The best public speaking students at UW-Stevens Point competed Saturday.

Six students were chosen to give speeches from what professors say is about 900 students taking the public speaking class.

Four judges were on hand to determine the first, second and third place informative and persuasive speeches.

Professors say public speaking is a real life skill for college students to learn.

"Employers are largely looking for skill sets related to problem solving and public speaking, oral communication and things like that so these are skills that employers are looking for in students that are able to demonstrate this," said Cade Spaulding, the public speaking director at UWSP. "They can put it on a resume, and they can show employers they have these kinds of skills."

Each student speaker Saturday received a scholarship, with top prize being $500.
