Wausau restaurant serves free Easter meal

WAUSAU (WAOW) - One Wausau restaurant celebrates Easter every year by giving back to the community.

Wausau Mine Company served meals to those in need at its 25th annual free Easter dinner.

Restaurant co-owner Dan Wage says about 50 volunteers served a record-high 800 people this year.

That includes dine-in, delivery and carry-out meals.

Event leaders say they served about 300 meals at the first dinner.

"It gets busy at the churches and they take on the Christmases and Thanksgivings, but for some reason Easter was never taken in for the people in need," said Wage. "So my dad started [the dinner] and we've kept it going and it's a real pleasure to give something back."

Volunteers prepare the food, box it up and deliver to families all throughout Marathon County.

The meal included ham, mashed potatoes, baked beans and a cookie.

"There's no way we could do this without the volunteers," said Wage. "A lot of them come every year. It's their tradition too."

Volunteer Jack Zeinert says he has helped with the dinner for about ten years. It’s a tradition Zeinert says he'll continue as long as he can.

"It's a good feeling you bet," said Zeinert. "You wish them a good Easter and in turn you get a big hug for it."

Wausau Mine Company leaders says they hope to continue the dinner for years to come.
