Dec. 2013 Jefferson Award: Deanne Jenkins

Posted:
A central Wisconsin woman is busy getting ready for the holidays, but it's not just for her family and friends – it's for people she doesn't even know.

That's why Deanne Jenkins is our Jefferson Award winner for December 2013.

In the basement of Covenant Community Presbyterian Church in Weston is a holiday workshop of sorts.

“I have a lot of people who help and it is wonderful that the community supports it,” said Jenkins.

Jenkins organizes the Christmas Families Program. For 20 years, she's helped collect the donations. Last year, her generosity, her kindness and her organizing skills helped 43 needy families.

“All I do is connect the dots between the needy families and those those who make the donations,” she said.

You can see Jenkins is quick to downplay her role in ensuring families will have a holiday meal, family activity box with games and puzzles, or cold weather gear.

“We also make certain the children are covered for winter coats, snow pants and boots. Everyone is willing to make sure that our kids are taken care of," Jenkins said.

During the off-season, she organizes the buying of coats, boots and snow pants so they are ready to go when the cold weather arrives.

If you ask her about why she volunteers, she says it is the gratitude she remembers from a little girl who received one of the winter coats.

“My thanks was multiple times over the look on her face. I can still see it."

A warm memory with another season of giving upon us.

If you know someone who goes above and beyond in their volunteer efforts you can nominate them for a Jefferson Award by clicking here.
