Jan. 2014 Jefferson Award: Paul Morrison

A military veteran from Wood County is reaching out to make sure the sacrifices of those who have served their country will not be forgotten.

For his efforts, Paul Morrison is being honored with a Jefferson Award for January 2014.

Morrison, of Wisconsin Rapids, is one of many veterans featured in a Fleet Farm ad.

"The locations and the bonds we shared were unspoken. We share something unique as veterans."

You may have seen the ad on TV or the JumboTron at Lambeau Field.

"A lot of people told me they've seen it,” Morrison said.

During his nearly 23 years of service, he received a Purple Heart. He retired after being hurt in Iraq in a roadside bombing.

"The hardest and some of best times,” he remembered.

Now, Morrison works in the Adams County Sheriff's Department and volunteers his time sharing his stories about life in the military with students.

"A lot of things I never knew I could do, in the army I learned I could do it."

He says those lessons led him to collect school supplies here in this country and deliver them to students in Iraq.

Through his work with a christian youth group, he organized a deer hunt for disabled veterans and now says he makes frequent trips to the veterans home in King to meet with others who served their country.

“I think the important thing for veterans is they don't want to be forgotten, for their time or their service," Morrison said.

If you know someone who goes above and beyond in their volunteer efforts you can nominate them for a Jefferson Award by clicking here.
