WAUSAU (WAOW) - A Wausau businessman announced his candidacy Thursday for the Republican nomination for the state Assembly in District 85, which includes the Wausau area.
Dave Heaton, a reinsurance consultant for Nationwide Insurance, said he wants to "make a difference in our community," pledging to work to reduce taxes, create a business-friendly environment and "guard the hard-earned dollars of the district's families."
On Wednesday, the incumbent, Democrat Mandy Wright, announced she would seek re-election to a second term.
Heaton, a former assistant state's attorney in Cook County, Ill., who moved to Wausau seven years ago, is married and has three children. He said he served six years in the Air National Guard while working his way through college.
The 85th District includes Wausau, Schofield, Weston, Rothschild and eastern Marathon County.
Two years ago, Wright got 50 percent of the vote in winning election to her first term, narrowly defeating Republican Pat Snyder and Libertarian Jim Maas.
