Sobering lessons for Rhinelander students

Life Changing Lesson Life Changing Lesson
RHINELANDER (WAOW) - With prom and graduation right around the corner, Rhinelander High School students heard some sobering stories and lessons Thursday about the dangers of drinking and driving.

Survivors of crashes caused by drunken drivers and some drivers who killed or hurt people after drinking and driving told the students about the devastating consequences of such behavior.

"It was really emotional and a great way to kick off our prom weekend," senior Luke Linsmeyer said.

Last year, Jason Breitenfeld of Tomahawk survived a crash caused by a drunken  driver in St. Germain.

"I beg you, don't get behind the wheel of a car after even one drink, " Breitenfeld told the students.

He talked about his lengthy hospital stay, his four surgeries and his need for more surgery.

"It changed my life," Breitenfeld said.

The speakers were part of a "victim impact panel" organized by the Northwoods Restorative Justice Program, which serves Vilas, Oneida and Forest counties.
