Basketball tournament announced to replace Gus Macker

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- A three-on-three basketball tournament has been announced to replace the long-running Gus Macker tournament in Wausau.

The Badger State Games and Wisconsin Sports Services have teamed up for the change, according to a press release Friday.

The new tournament will be called the Badgerland three-on-three State Championships, as part of the Badger State Games. The event is scheduled for Father's Day Weekend at D.C. Everest High School and at the YMCA.

Organizers say this tournament will cost less than the Gus Macker, with registration fees of $120 per team.

Last year, Newman Catholic High School announced it was discontinuing the summertime Macker tournament because of rising costs and diminishing participation numbers. Organizers say when the tournament started in 1991, more than 1,000 teams participated. They say in last year's tournament, only 400 teams participated.

Right now, the closest Gus Macker tournament is in Eau Claire.
