New Wausau bike racks to be designed by students

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Wausau will be spicing up downtown parking options for bicycle riders.

The city's Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee is holding a student contest to design some new bike racks. Five teams developed unique designs.

One of them is a group of students from the Engineering and Global Leadership Academy in Wausau. They've been working on the design since last Fall.

They say they're happy with how it turned out but the experience wasn't always smooth sailing.

They started out with the two goals of keeping the design simplistic and having it represent Wausau in a positive manner.

"I didn't really think anything of it at first, like it didn't seem real that it was going to be placed somewhere that I would see every day," said tenth grader Trenton Meyers.

They say the process of turning an idea into a finished product had its challenges.

"From the very first design, it wasn't really possible at all with the limitations that we had," said tenth grader Taylor Mae Ippolito.

The team of several students worked with Wausau businesses to make it happen.

"One of the bends in it wasn't as easy as they thought it would be and so they just kind of had to change the design a little bit," said tenth grader Declan Demille.

They say getting through those speed bumps taught them about teamwork.

"[We were] working together with a group and figuring out what the strengths and weaknesses are of individuals and really focusing on the strengths," Meyers said.

They say they developed those strengths all by themselves.

"You can ask teachers for help but they're not going to take you step by step through everything," said Demille.

With the work done, it's now a waiting game for the final results.

"I just think it's really cool that it's going to be out for everybody to see in the public," Demille said.

Online voting started Monday and ends Friday when the teams will present their designs to judges. The winner of the contest will get first choice on where their racks will go in the city.
