UPDATE: Suspect named in Marshfield business break in, fire

MARSHFIELD (WAOW) -- One man is behind bars after Marshfield police say he burglarized a business and then lit it on fire.

Michael Straka, 19, was arrested early Tuesday morning. He's currently in the Wood County Jail.

Marshfield Police Lieutenant Darren Larson says Straka broke into Avalon on 4th just after 1 a.m.

When officers arrived, police say Straka tried to escape through the window but came in contact with an officer. It was then, police say, Straka lit part of the building on fire and was still inside.

Lt. Larson says police set up a perimeter so firefighters could fight the fire. They say Straka later surrendered.

"They were able to secure one side of the building so we were able to go up with a hose, break a window, and put most of the fire out,” explained Marshfield Fire Chief Robert Haight. “Then, we retreated back while they sent their SWAT team in to clear the building and make sure there was nobody else left behind there."

Two apartments are located on the second floor of the building. Authorities say no one was injured. Firefighters say the fire was contained to one room, and some merchandise was destroyed.

Police say charges have been forwarded to the Wood County district attorney's office for review.
