Red Cross volunteers on standby for tornado aid

Red Cross Red Cross
WAUSAU (WAOW) - Red Cross volunteers from the Wausau-based office are ready to help tornado victims in the southern United States, authorities said Tuesday.

"Right now we are on standby. As time goes on, they will need to replace workers and I am sure we will send in workers from this particular area," said Red Cross chapter executive Wendy Savage.

Savage says the volunteers who respond first take care of the basic necessities like food, water and shelter for survivors.

They also provide emotional support and help victims begin the planning process for rebuilding their lives.

At least 31 people have died in the storms that have pushed across the South, beginning Monday.
