Rhinelander woman lending a hand with tornado relief

RHINELANDER (WAOW) -- A Rhinelander woman is heading to tornado-ravaged Arkansas with the Red Cross Thursday.

Carol Miller says she doesn't know exactly what she'll be doing when she gets there, but she says she's ready to use her training as a registered nurse any way she can.

"I feel like I'm called to be a servant to help my neighbors in need and this is definitely a way to do it," she said.

Miller says her first experience as a volunteer came with Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This will be her seventh trip with the Red Cross.

"You know generally where you're going and generally what you're going to be doing but you have to remain flexible and open to whatever the need is once you get on the ground," Miller said. "I could be manning an aid station out in the field someplace or I could be at headquarters but primarily working with clients."

She'll help the people who have been affected the most.

"Sometimes it's replacing medications or eyeglasses or other things that they need to function based on what has happened to them and what their particular needs are," said Miller.

She says every situation brings its own challenges, but she'll be ready.

"You don't know the extent of what the disaster really looks like until you get on the ground," Miller said.

She's flying to Little Rock Thursday afternoon and is staying a little more than two weeks.
