Students get hands-on fire safety lesson

Some students got a hands-on experience with fire safety Thursday.

Fifth and sixth graders at St. Peter Lutheran School learned how to use fire extinguishers and other safety tools. The Schofield Fire Department visited the school to give a lesson. The school received a grant to teach fire safety from the Alliance of Fire Safety. School leaders say the lesson was a good way to make safety education fun.

"We're always trying to make sure that kids can do hands-on types of things and things that are more interactive than just a teacher talking to them," said St. Peter Lutheran School Principal Scott Huebner. "This was a great way we could meet that need, get the kids really actively involved in what they're doing, but also talk to them about something that's important and could become an issue for each of them."

Students also received free smoke detectors to put in their homes.
