Man arrested after owner finds burglar in home

A Vilas County couple had a scare Friday morning after finding a prowler in their home.

"It's unknown why the person was in the house," said Chief Deputy Mark Collins of the Vilas County Sheriff's Dept.

Officials say officers responded to a home on east Highway 70 after 3:30 a.m.

"The female resident was woken up to a noise in the house," said Collins.

Officials say she found something bent over in her dining room.

When she went to touch it, a man in a hooded sweatshirt jumped up and ran out the back door.

Investigators searched the area when they arrived.

"Footracks inside the garage area that would indicate that someone had recently been in the garage," said Collins.

Authorities say a police dog tracked down a suspect at a neighboring home.

Officers arrested 22-year-old Kevin Kurek without incident.

According to online court records, Kurek has been charged with theft in the past.

Officials say nothing was stolen from the Arbor Vitae home.

"It is unusual for us to have a report of an occupied residence being entered by someone who isn't welcome at the house," said Collins. "It's generally if a burglary occurs it's to an unoccupied place."

Investigators declined to release any other details.

"Once we complete the investigation, we'll have a better understanding of why this even happened," said Collins.

No charges were filed on Friday.

Officers did not release the names of the people inside the home.
