Neighbors rescue man from fast moving Portage Co. river
PORTAGE COUNTY (WAOW) -
Neighbors were able to spot a man who fell into a fast moving river Friday, according to the Portage County Sheriff's Department.
Officials say around 10:00 a.m. Lawrence Meixner, 64, of Stevens Point was fishing in the Wisconsin River when his small fishing boat flipped over in the Town of Carson, off the County Highway HH boat landing. They say neighbors Marilyn and Ron Flood spotted Meixner grasping onto the side of his boat, struggling to stay afloat in the cold, rushing water.
While Marilyn Flood called 911, Ron Flood was able to get a pontoon boat and pull Meixner to safety, according to sheriff's officials. They say Meixner was transported to the hospital.
His current condition is unknown, but sheriff's officials tell Newsline 9 they expect him to be fine.
Authorities tell Newsline 9 that the water in the Wisconsin River is too high and is moving too fast for anyone to go out there safely. They want to remind boaters who plan on heading to the water to use caution and wear a life vest.
