STEVENS POINT (WAOW) – New charges accusing a Stevens Point businessman of sexually assaulting three young women allege he was invited to one's home to use a shower and raped her in bed.
The 20-year-old woman told investigators that she stopped fighting Steven Tibbetts because she had been raped twice before by other people and “that is why she did not resist,” a criminal complaint said.
Tibbets, owner of the Energy Cafe, is now charged with three counts of second-degree sexual assault and one count of fourth-degree sexual assault involving four women, according to online Portage County court records. The most recent charges involved incidents that occurred last year, the complaints said.
Assistant District Attorney David Knappen said Friday the investigation continues.
“Is it possible there could be more (victims)? I can't say,” he said.
The first victim who accused Tibbetts of raping her led the other alleged victims to come forward with new accusations, Knappen said.
That 18-year-old woman told investigators she was drugged and awoke to Tibbetts raping her earlier this year, according to a complaint filed in March.
The three new complaints were filed in April and Thursday, court records said.
The third victim said she met Tibbetts at a Wal-Mart, she went on a date with him, they ended up at his home at the cafe, he groped her and refused to stop, another person came into the room and she was able to leave, the complaint said.
The fourth victim, a 25-year-old woman, told investigators she went out on a date with Tibbetts last May and ended up in the basement of the Energy Cafe, they watched a movie,Tibbetts climbed on top of her and he grabbed her breasts before she was able to “wiggle free,” the complaint said.
