Marshfield woman pleads not guilty to church theft

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) – A 50-year-old Marshfield woman pleaded not guilty Monday to a charge accusing her of stealing about $22,000 from a church where she worked.

Renee E. Thompson was charged with one count of theft. She waived her right to a preliminary hearing before pleading not guilty, according to online Wood County court records.

Thompson stole the money from Faith Lutheran Church in Marshfield for more than two years, beginning in April 2011, repeatedly using a church card to buy groceries or using prepaid check cards to pay her bills, according to the criminal complaint.

Last November, the pastor of the church found 22 unauthorized purchases on the card used at Pick 'Save in Marshfield, leading police to view surveillance video at the store and confront Thompson about the purchases, the complaint said.

Thompson told an investigator that she had been unable to handle the grief of her parents' deaths and “she got behind her bills and things seemed to snowball from there,” the complaint said.

No trial date was immediately set.

Thompson is free on a $10,000 signature bond that requires she have no contact with Faith Lutheran Church, online court records said.
