Hospital: Shooting victims in good condition

WAUSAU (WAOW) – A man and woman wounded in a weekend shooting at their rural Wausau home were reported in good condition late Wednesday, a hospital spokesman said.

Patrick and Sandra Schmitt have been hospitalized at Aspirus Wausau Hospital since Saturday's shooting.

Their nephew, 21-year-old Kyle Schaefer, has been charged with one count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide and three counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

Investigators say Schaefer lives at the home and fired at least three shots from a .22-caliber rifle after he emerged from the home's basement about 9:30 p.m. as his relatives played cards. He was arrested without incident.

A criminal complaint said Schaefer's grandmother recently died and Schaefer recently lost a job. Police said the wounded uncle had been helping Schaefer find a job.

Schaefer remains jailed on a $1 million cash bond. His preliminary hearing is set for May 14.
