No cause yet in fatal rural Tomahawk fire

TOMAHAWK (WAOW) – What caused the fire that killed an elderly homeowner and destroyed his rural Tomahawk home three weeks ago has not been pinpointed, an investigator said Thursday.

Kenneth Pietila, 70, who was wheelchair-bound, was found inside the burning home, Tomahawk firefighters were able to rescue him from the basement but he was “beyond life-saving measures,” Lincoln County Sheriff Jeff Jaeger said at the time.

The fire was reported early the afternoon of April 17 by a man who had arrived at the home to plow snow and saw smoke coming out a basement window, the sheriff said.

No details about where or how the fire started have been given.

Lt. Mark Gartmann said Thursday that investigators were awaiting reports from the state fire marshal and an insurance company to wrap up the investigation. That could take two more months, he said.

We don't suspect foul play but we got to answer some questions before we make a final report,” Gartmann said.
