Officials: Marathon County building total loss after fire

A workshop in Marathon County went up in flames Saturday. The men inside say they got out with only minutes to spare.

Gary Burmeister says he and his son was working on a car when it suddenly caught on fire.

“There was a hole in the gas tank and it exploded almost instantly,” said Burmeister. “We ran out.”

He says only minutes later the entire building was engulfed in flames.

Onlookers say they could hear pops as items inside the building exploded.

“The explosions were big enough that people were staying back. I mean, you could tell that it was dangerous,” said Joe Courchaine, a neighbor.

Fire officials say the building and everything inside is a total loss. The owner says some of the things inside included a tractor, a camper, a 4-wheeler and a golf cart.

Burmeister says he ran a business out of this workshop. He says he's unsure how he's going to replace all of the equipment.

But he says the damage could have been worse.

“The building is shot but it'd be worse if someone got killed in there,” said Burmeister.

Fire officials say they don't believe the fire is suspicious.
