Brahimi resigning as UN-Arab League envoy to Syria

Posted:
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says Lakhdar Brahimi will resign as the joint U.N.-Arab League envoy on Syria on May 31 after a nearly two-year effort which failed to bring peace to the war-ravaged country.

The U.N. chief made the announcement to reporters on Tuesday. He pledged to keep working to achieve peace.

When Brahimi took the job after his longtime friend, former U.N. secretary-general Kofi Annan, failed to end the conflict, he said it would be "an extremely complicated and very, very difficult mission."

He managed to get the government and opposition to talks in Geneva in late February aimed at forging a path out of Syria's civil war but they reached an impasse.
